Hello! I'm Ash Matter.
One of the funny things about growing up with undiagnosed autism is that you also grow up with undiagnosed special interests. As a child I adored drawing (still do), creating new characters (that as well), and verbally narrating what happened when they met each other (yup). I would sit for hours, sketching, making up worlds, and talking to myself. This was quite charming at six.By high school, it became apparent that the career options for “Advanced Make Believe” were…limited at best and I might need to expand my horizons.
So I became a Very Serious Adult, which mostly meant that I stopped narrating but kept drawing. I meandered from college to job to job, hauling an increasingly alarming amount of sketchbooks with me wherever I went.Eventually, someone married me (go figure) and we had a kid. And then one day, in the bizarro twilight that is early childhood parenting, I sat on the floor coloring with my daughter. All of the sudden, characters started pouring out—a vivacious T-Rex with a superiority complex. The last triceratops, still holding out hope for love, a chronically grumpy fairy king and many others that followed.
While In the middle of an extended riff starring a needy carrot, my husband interrupted me and gently pointed out that voice acting is also a job, there is something in the world called “improv” and that perhaps there was a better use for my cartoons than filling up sketchbooks and packing them away in boxes.
So I dusted off the old vocal cords, trained with the Upright Citizens Brigade, and learned about animation. And now, a few years later and with the support of a small but mighty team, here we are.
Welcome to Unusual Thing Animated Improv.
